§1

Support by language and market

16 rows, 8 fields

Steam publishes a language table for every listed app, and GRAIN ROT's carries eight fields per row: the language name, its primary market, whether the in-game interface is translated, whether it carries full voice or only subtitles, whether the store page itself is translated, a depth-of-support summary, the Steam language code the API uses internally, and — added by this site — a SITE LOCALE column that maps the row onto this wiki's own fourteen locales. Two of Steam's sixteen rows, German and Portuguese (Brazil), fall outside this site's locale set and are marked accordingly rather than omitted, since the table is Steam's complete published record and cutting rows would misrepresent it.

Store frame 7 — a readable subtitle lineThe only official frame with legible in-game subtitle text: "We could always use an extra set of hands." Ten of the eleven in-game languages carry lines like this one with no accompanying voice.

Turkish is the row worth checking twice: the storefront reads Turkish, the game does not. Polish, Thai, Vietnamese and Indonesian get neither, so a player in Warsaw or Bangkok plays in English even though this wiki itself publishes in all four of those languages.

§2

The official term ledger

9 terms × 9 languages

These are the publisher's own words, not a fan translation, pulled from the localized store descriptions the Steam appdetails API returns per language code. Nine languages have them; Polish, Thai, Vietnamese and Indonesian return the English text unchanged, so no official terminology exists there and the English names stay rather than being invented. Change the language in the selector above the table to re-file this ledger against any of the nine.

Nine core terms as the publisher writes them
EnglishJapaneseWhat it is
Living Spark 命の火花 The player character: an artificial spark that survives only while it inhabits a wooden vessel.
Spark 火花 The bodiless state you enter when your vessel breaks, before you fade out or possess a new host.
vessel 木製の機体 The fragile wooden body you possess; it splinters, collapses and catches fire.
Outpost 前哨基地 The persistent surface base you rebuild between runs.
Grinder グラインダー The machine that converts hauled furniture into gold.
the Rot 腐蝕 The corruption that intensifies with depth and warps bodies, voices and emotes.
Deep Layers 深部階層 The shifting underground ruins you descend into.
Corrupted 腐敗した機体 Hostile vessels twisted by the Rot that react to sound, movement and each other.
cursed elevator 呪われたエレベーター The lift that carries the crew from the Outpost down into a run.

All 9 terms carry publisher-written Japanese wording.

The Russian row is the one worth reading closely: the publisher renders eight of the nine terms as nouns but gives the Grinder no noun at all, writing it only as the verb перемалывать ("to grind up"). That gap is recorded here rather than papered over with an invented Russian noun, because inventing one would misrepresent what the publisher actually shipped.

§3

Why the title never changes

15 language responses checked

GRAIN ROT is published as the same Latin-script string in all fifteen Steam language responses that were checked — no translated title, no transliteration, not even in Japanese, Korean or Chinese, where a localized title is the norm for most Steam releases in those markets. Search for the game in any language and the name you type is the name the store uses, which is also why this site's own officialGameName record is identical across every one of its fourteen locales.

Inside the game the picture differs from the storefront in one important way: ten of the eleven in-game languages carry interface text and subtitles with no voice, so a Japanese or Ukrainian player reads lines like the Outpost's "We could always use an extra set of hands" rather than hearing them spoken. English is the only language where that same line is voiced, which the HUD table on The Descent and the subtitle frame above both draw from the same publisher-provided material.
