GRAIN ROT PC requirements, minimum and recommended

GRAIN ROT publishes one specification block, verbatim from the Steam appdetails pc_requirements field, with a minimum and a recommended value for every row. Five of the seven rows are byte-for-byte identical between tiers; only the processor and the graphics card actually change. Every value in the table is copied character for character from the storefront field the Steam client itself reads before allowing a purchase, so there is no paraphrasing between what Valve serves and what this sheet prints.

If a machine clears a GTX 970 and a Core i5-4590 it already meets five of the seven rows; the recommended tier only asks for a faster processor and a newer card — an i5-10600 or Ryzen 5 3600, and an RTX 2060 or RX 5700. Nothing in the requirements block distinguishes single-player from four-player co-op, so this specification is presumed to cover both — the store lists Online Co-op as a supported mode without a separate multiplayer requirements tier. The five identical rows are worth reading once rather than skipping: 8 GB of RAM, DirectX 11, a broadband connection and 10 GB of free storage are the same floor whether a machine is scraping by on the minimum tier or comfortably ahead on the recommended one, so upgrading a GPU or CPU alone is enough to move between tiers without touching memory or storage.

Expanded game, audio and video settings are also on the 1.0 list; the demo shipped a reduced settings menu, per the same 14 July scope announcement that Demo vs 1.0 carries in full. Controller support is worth flagging on its own: it is one of only two platform-facing changes the developers explicitly dated to 1.0, alongside the settings menu expansion, so a demo-era report of no gamepad support is now out of date rather than still accurate. The two accessibility flags are easy to miss in a specification table but answer a real question for some buyers: Custom Volume Controls means audio channels can be balanced independently, and Playable without Timed Input means no mechanic in the published feature list requires hitting a reaction window to progress.

A GTX 970 minimum is a low bar for a game Steam tags Survival Horror and Action Roguelike with Procedural Generation, and the shape of the run explains why: The Descent describes physics-driven furniture destruction and a handful of vessels on screen at once rather than large crowds or open-world streaming, which is the kind of scene a seven-year-old mid-range card can still carry at the minimum tier. The recommended tier's jump to an RTX 2060 or RX 5700 looks like a target for stable frame rates during the combat and blast-effect moments described on The Descent, not evidence of a heavier engine underneath.

The unchanged rows matter just as much for a co-op purchase decision. Broadband is listed once, with no separate bandwidth figure for a four-player lobby, and 8 GB of RAM is the same whether a machine is hosting or joining. Anyone deciding whether to buy alongside a specific group of friends is really asking two questions at once — can my machine run it, and can my connection carry Online Co-op — and this sheet only has a confirmed answer to the first one, since the developers have not published a hosting or bandwidth specification separate from the single-player requirements block.
